History of Leather Carving

In history, a leather-crafter is someone who makes, sews and repairs items made from leather or leather materials. They generally work with their hands and use specialized tools to work, mold and shape leather into various finished goods.

Leathercraft has been known since 1300 BC, in modern leathercraft there are 2 ways, namely by handmade and machinemade.

The history of the development of leathercraft began since the ancient Prehistoric Period (50,000 BC) at that time humans would generally use animal skins as clothing, with fur still on it that serves for protection. The history of leather carving comes from the Moors (710-1492 BC) who occupied the Iberian peninsula and defeated the Spanish and Portuguese kingdoms at that time, found floral and vine motifs applied to leather crafts on their leather goods and the motifs were often found on Muslim goods at that time. The Moors’ leathercraft techniques became part of the Spanish culture and were eventually introduced to the new world through the colonization of Mexico, Latin America and other continents. Leathercraft as it is known today is an amalgamation of various cultural interpretations applied in the style of each region.
